NordLynx: NordVPN's Speed-First Protocol Explained
What It Is
NordLynx is a VPN protocol developed by NordVPN, introduced in 2020. It's not built from scratch — instead, it takes WireGuard, one of the fastest and most modern VPN protocols available, and wraps it in an additional privacy layer to address a key weakness. The result is a protocol that aims to deliver the best of both worlds: WireGuard's raw speed and a stronger commitment to user anonymity.
The name blends "Nord" (from NordVPN) with "Lynx," evoking speed and agility — and in practice, that branding holds up reasonably well.
How It Works
To understand NordLynx, you first need to know a little about WireGuard. WireGuard is a lean, modern protocol praised for its speed and simplicity. However, it has a notable privacy limitation: by design, WireGuard needs to store your IP address on the VPN server temporarily to maintain a stable connection. For a no-log VPN provider, that's a problem.
NordVPN's solution was to build a double Network Address Translation (NAT) system around WireGuard. Here's how that works in plain terms:
- First NAT layer: When you connect, NordLynx assigns you a local IP address within a private network. This internal address is used to establish your WireGuard tunnel but is never tied to your identity in any permanent way.
- Second NAT layer: Your traffic passes through a second translation point before exiting to the internet, further separating your real IP from your actual online activity.
- Session management: NordVPN's system handles authentication separately, so the VPN server itself doesn't need to log or retain your real IP to keep your connection alive.
This double NAT approach allows NordVPN to use WireGuard's efficient codebase — which is roughly 4,000 lines of code, compared to OpenVPN's tens of thousands — without compromising on its no-log policy.
Under the hood, NordLynx uses ChaCha20 encryption (WireGuard's default cipher), which is fast and secure, particularly on mobile devices and older hardware that lack AES acceleration.
Why It Matters for VPN Users
Speed is the headline reason most users choose NordLynx. Because WireGuard is lightweight and uses modern cryptography, connection speeds with NordLynx are typically faster than with OpenVPN or IKEv2. Real-world tests often show NordLynx delivering close to your raw internet speed, with minimal overhead from encryption.
But speed without privacy would be pointless for a VPN. NordVPN's double NAT system means you get WireGuard's performance without handing the server a persistent record of who you are. That matters if you take no-log policies seriously.
NordLynx also excels at connection stability — WireGuard handles network switching (like moving from Wi-Fi to mobile data) gracefully, so your VPN tunnel is less likely to drop when your connectivity changes.
Practical Use Cases
- Streaming: NordLynx's low latency and high throughput make it a strong choice for streaming HD or 4K content through NordVPN servers. Buffering is less likely when your VPN overhead is minimal.
- Gaming: Competitive gamers who use a VPN to reduce ISP throttling or access different regional servers will appreciate the reduced ping that NordLynx typically delivers compared to older protocols.
- Large file transfers and torrenting: Faster sustained speeds mean quicker downloads when using NordVPN's P2P-optimized servers.
- Mobile use: ChaCha20 encryption performs efficiently on smartphones without draining battery excessively.
- Everyday browsing: For users who just want a "set it and forget it" protocol, NordLynx is NordVPN's recommended default — it's fast, stable, and requires no manual configuration.
Should You Use It?
If you're a NordVPN subscriber, NordLynx is worth using as your default protocol in most situations. It's the fastest option available on the platform and the privacy concerns that originally plagued WireGuard have been meaningfully addressed. For situations requiring maximum stealth or compatibility with corporate firewalls, OpenVPN may still be preferable — but for everyday use, NordLynx is hard to beat.
